A Green Renovation

ECO Garden | Green Roof | Porous Paving | Rainwater Goods | External Wall Insulation

Eco Garden - Bournville Village Landscapes in conjunction with advice from Middlemarch

  • Ecological Enhancement.
  • Opportunities to retain existing and encourage new flora and fauna.
  • Minimise disruption to the ecology of the garden pre and post construction.

Extensive Green Roof

  • Reduces rainwater run-off, absorbs 40% of average rainfall.
  • Reduces heat island effect which is air cooled by evaporation.
  • Improves air quality:
    1. - Oxygen produced by planting.
    2. - Damp surface retains dust, etc.
    3. - particles.
  • Biodiversity, creates a natural habitat.

Porous Paving to Drive by Marshalls

Porous paving allows water to percolate into the earth below therefore reducing surface water runoff and the amount of water that enters the public sewers.

External Wall Insulation

Most pre-1930’s homes are solid external wall construction. Options for insulating are external or internal:

  • Cladding the external face
    1. - over rendering.
  • Fixing insulation internally
    1. - dry lining.

Advantages of external thermal render insulation:

  • Can be applied without vacating the property.
  • Does not reduce internal floor area.

Considerations

  • Depth of insulation can be up to 100mm thick, may necessitate adjustment to external features.

Advantages

  • As well as improving thermal performance of the external walls and reducing space heating costs, there are improvements in comfort levels.
  • Thermal board lining has also been utilised on this project to maximise the thermal insulation achieving a ‘U’ Value of 0.2W/m2K.
