Residents at The Quadrangle a South Birmingham sheltered housing scheme situated in Bournville are the latest to win a ‘green’ award for their recycling efforts.

Bournville Almshouse Trust residents dutifully recycle cans, bottles and paper every day.  We nominate a ‘Green Champion’ award to staff, residents or organisations for outstanding ‘green’ efforts.  The latest award goes to residents who live in the thirty three bungalows which are managed and let by Bournville Almshouse Trust to provide a home for ex Cadbury workers, pensioners and also people in need.

Janet Mawson, Warden at the Almshouse Trust in Mary Vale Road said: “We all fastidiously recycle everything, from magazines, daily papers, cardboard containers to plastic bottles, glass containers and old biscuit tins.

Chief Executive Peter Roach who is Chair of our Green Team presented a cheque for £100 to the residents which Janet says will be used towards an outing or an in house activity such as an afternoon tea/entertainer.

Peter says: “We all have an important role to play as individuals in helping to reduce the effects of global warming.  Although initially some of these changes appear insignificant, over time they do represent major costs to Bournville Village Trust and to the environment.  I am delighted to reward the efforts of residents at the Almshouse Trust.”

The ‘Green Champion’ awards are part of an initiative we established in 2007 as part of our Environmental Strategy.  Other projects include promoting and monitoring a number of environmental action points for all 300 staff.  These range from a long list of simple things such as switching off lights and maximising the use of natural daylight as well as emailing documents instead of circulating printed copies.

We liaise with ‘green’ organisations such as Friends of the Earth for help and advice with this very worthwhile initiative.
