South Birmingham residents who have disabilities will be able to join a community fishing group, thanks to a grant from the People's Millions (Big Lottery).  £50,000 has been donated to the 'Get Hooked on Fishing' project, which will improve the lake area of Rowheath Park and its fishing facilities, making it accessible for people in wheelchairs. Project Manager, Andy Walker said: "Work has already started on clearing the lake and fitting an aeration system. The improvements will help provide better access for people with disabilities, as well as replenishing fish supplies."

'Get Hooked on Fishing' which is supported by Bournville Village Trust, was established in South Birmingham three years ago and has won awards for the innovative approach it uses to combat anti social behaviour problems. GHOF also uses angling to reconnect young people with education, develop new social skills, and learn new angling skills.

Andy Walker said: "In the past, we have had enquiries from youngsters with disabilities who wanted to join the GHOF scheme and we have had to turn them down because of a lack of suitable access. Membership is now really popular in the area and is quickly spreading throughout the Midlands region."
