Lottery Funding Provides Games Area for South Birmingham Residents

October 23 2007

A major campaign by South Birmingham residents and their housing association to obtain a badly needed games area for youngsters has led to a successful lottery funding grant.

Shenley residents identified the need for play facilities at a 'Planning for Real' exercise held by Bournville Village Trust Housing Association in 2006. The Trust applied for lottery funding of £75,000 which will go towards the development of a multi use games area costing £400,000.

Planning permission has been received by Bournville Village Trust which will develop and manage the work which is due to commence next month (November). Linked to the Green Meadow Primary School in Selly Oak, pupils will be able to use the facilities during the day and the community will use them the remainder of the time.

The scheme which is expected to be completed by the end of this year will include a young children's play area and provision for football and basketball. In line with George Cadbury's philosophy of a green living environment, the games area will have lots of landscaping, park benches and lighting.

Louise McDonald, a local mother said "We are looking forward to being able to make use of this equipment and are glad that Bournville Village Trust is investing in projects for our young people."
