Mary Vale Road Restoration, Bournville
Four Grade II listed shops in the conservation area have been restored to their former glory. The Trust spent £750,000 on the refurbishment, which included apartments above the shops plus the restoration of 2 houses and the additional of one new build dwelling.
The site covers about half and acre on the corner of Linden Road and Mary Vale Road. One of the restored houses (222 Mary Vale Road) was the very first house which George Cadbury built on the Estate in 1895 with the shops, following in 1898. They were the first to be provided by George Cadbury, as part of his philanthropic vision to create a unique community adjacent to the Bournville Factory.
The piece was designed in the shape of an ammonite, a fossil shell whose spiral form represents looking towards the future.
Mary Vale Road lies at an important gateway to the Bournville Estate, and the prominent buildings face the historic Almshouses, which also date from the end of the 19th century.
The design of the project combined sensitive restoration and enhancement, with the needs and wishes of local residents, who now benefit from modern accommodation, but in buildings which retain their original architectural style.
