View of Bournville village green by artist Michael Reilly.

After the successful move of the Cadbury Brothers factory to Bournville, George Cadbury decided to build a garden village next to it. He was spurred on by the dreadful conditions he saw in the slums of Birmingham, and started to develop a small community with well planned houses and big gardens. The first 140 acres were purchased in 1895 and 143 cottages were built.

Typical house plan for a Bournville house, with lighter living rooms than a traditional terraced house.
Typical House Plan

Houses of different sizes were built together to create a mixture of small and large families. By the turn of the 20th century there were 313 houses on 330 acres. Gradually the heart of the village grew around the village green with the shops, school and other community buildings. On 14th December 1900 George Cadbury set up the Bournville Village Trust to maintain and develop the estate which it still does today.
