Medieval Life

Back to Local History

The medieval period or middle ages were between 1066 and 1485. There were few towns except London and most people lived in small villages in the countryside, with farming as the main occupation. Life was basically contained in the village, travelling tended to be on foot or horseback to the market in the local town. Almost everyone grew their fruit and vegetables, kept animals and caught fish and rabbits etc. They made their own clothes, toys & other belongings.

The wealthier houses would have been like Minworth Greaves. A large open hall for living where the cooking, eating and household work would take place. Some would have had a seperate sleeping area or else everyone including the animals would bunk in together!
