What is a mutual exchange?
A mutual exchange is a way for tenants to exchange their tenancies without the need to go on a waiting list.
It gives tenants the opportunity to select their own property.
Tenants have the right to exchange their home with tenants of other landlords
You will need the written agreement of your current landlord before completing a mutual exchange.
Agreement will only be withheld for a very good reason for example:
- If either property is unsuitable for the person with whom you wish to exchange.
- Your rent account is not up-to-date.
- If there are any breaches of tenancy issues with either tenancy.
HOW DO I APPLY FOR A MUTUAL EXCHANGE?

The Trust has joined HomeSwapper which is the national mutual exchange scheme available to all tenants of social Landlords who want to move home.
It replaces our own internal mutual exchange system, so if you haven’t re registered with Homeswapper why not "log on" and join the thousands of tenants from around the UK who are looking for an exchange.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
- Any tenant wishing to pursue a mutual exchange should log on to the HomeSwapper website and follow the on screen instructions.
- It is then up to both parties to arrange to view each others properties before deciding whether or not they wish to proceed.
- If you wish to exchange tenancies you should both complete a mutual exchange application form available at the area office.
- In order to ensure that both properties are suitable for exchange, your housing assistant together with a maintenance surveyor will carry out necessary checks on the tenancies and arrange to visit you at home.
- All that is left then is to arrange a convenient date for the exchange to take place.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO COMPLETE A MUTUAL EXCHANGE?
A mutual exchange can normally be completed within six weeks if there are no unforeseen problems.
