Residents and staff of Bournville House, Lightmoor Village, Telford, will be opening their doors to the local community and local organisations for an event aimed at bringing people together on Saturday 4 October to remember and commemorate the sacrifice and service from the First and Second World Wars, as well as the armed services that have or are still serving the country.
A remembrance service led by Rev Leslie Burke from Elim Community Church will be held in the Bournville House gardens, and will incorporate a commemorative planting as well as flying of the Union Flag with the playing of the last post which will bring the service to a close.
The Commemoration Service will be followed by a street party, celebrating the golden era. Refreshments will also be available in the Bistro. Additionally, there will be chance for all those who attend to learn about the style of cookery using methods from the 1940’s and singer Tom Wenlock will be entertaining guests in the style of the 1940’s.
Danielle Gleave, Lifestyle Co-ordinator at Bournville House, said: “We hope as many people as possible will come along to our event, everyone is welcome and we hope guests will enter into the spirit of the day.
“It’s set to be a memorable day for all the family, as well as remembering the commitment and sacrifice given by our armed forces and heroes both past and present. All proceeds raised from the day will be going to support the fantastic work of “Help for Heroes” and the “Royal British Legion”.
Ruth Evans, Extra Care Manager at Bournville House, said: “This year marks 100 years since the start of the first World War and residents wanted to mark the contribution made by all those who served in it, and in subsequent conflicts, in a special way that also included members of the local community.
“As part of the event, we’ll be planting a cherry blossom tree and laying a plaque so that residents and the local community can commemorate and remember the sacrifices made by men and women during all conflicts for many years to come.”
The Remembrance Event will take place from 1.30pm until 8pm at Bournville House, Furnace Avenue, Lightmoor Village, Telford, TF4 3BY.
