BPS scoops second award for supporting apprentices

A Birmingham company recently crowned apprentice employer of the year is celebrating after scooping a second national award for its work in supporting young people.

Bournville PropertyCare Services (BPS), part of Bournville Village Trust, beat seven other companies from across the UK to win the Leadership and Development Award at the National Constructing Excellence Awards 2014.

The firm, which was established in the 1920s and employs 74 people, provides repairs and maintenance services to 8,000 homes managed by Bournville Village Trust in Birmingham and Shropshire.

Around 20 per cent of its workforce has come through its apprenticeship scheme, which supports youngsters to develop skills in plumbing, joinery, decorating, gas fitting or electrical work.

The company also works with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) to offer placements to apprentices who have been let down by previous employers and haven’t been able to finish their training.

Steve Fellows, Head of Asset Management at Bournville Village Trust, said: “To receive two awards this year that recognise our work with apprentices is fantastic.

“We have a passion and commitment to investing in apprentices and in turn training the people that we need to maintain and repair our homes and buildings in Bournville and Shropshire.

“This award is a credit to the hard work of all of our apprentices and the tradespeople who have mentored and supported them every day.”

The annual National Constructing Excellence Awards aim to recognise and reward excellence in construction. They are run by Constructing Excellence, an organisation which exists to improve industry performance in order to produce a better built environment.

Bournville PropertyCare Services is part of Bournville Village Trust, a housing association and charity which manages homes and provides services to 25,000 people.

Last month, BPS was named as the country’s Apprentice Employer of the Year by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) as part of its 50th Anniversary Pride of Construction Awards.
