Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week

It’s National Apprenticeship Week (5th-11th Feb), an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of apprentices and the positive impact they make to communities, businesses, and the wider economy.

We’re delighted to share the experiences of a couple of our apprentices this week, today it’s Angel (pictured on the right hand side of the photo) who is an apprentice electrician at BVT. She shares the best and most challenging things about being an apprentice and her advice for budding apprentices.

Why did you want to do an apprenticeship?

I wanted to try a different approach to education and learn on the job. I thought learning new skills in a different environment and meeting new people would be a better experience for me.

What attracted you to work at BVT?

I have always drove through Bournville to get to school and thought that it looks like a very nice area. When I found the job application I was over the moon because it’s so close to home and I would be a part of a community that would help me learn new skills and better myself.

What’s the best thing about being an apprentice at BVT?

I’d say the best thing about being an apprentice is the people we work with. They have welcomed us with opened arms and took us under their wings without question

I have learnt so much in this small amount of time from being constantly around lovely, experienced people and I can’t wait to see what happens in the future.

What’s the most challenging thing about being an apprentice?

At first the most challenging thing about being an apprentice was to jump into a trade which you knew nothing about headfirst. As time progressed it gets easier and you feel more confident. With experienced people around you it makes you feel comfortable in no time.

What advice would you give to someone looking to do an apprenticeship?

My advice would be don’t give it a second thought and just do it. It might be scary at first but it is worth it. Don’t be afraid to ask questions because at the end of the day it’s your education and future.
