Great gardens to be recognised with award scheme

Residents in Birmingham and Telford who go above and beyond to look after their gardens are to be recognised with a new award.

The Bournville Village Trust (BVT) Garden Award will replace the annual garden competition and will be given to residents whose gardens meet a standard of excellence.

Residents can nominate themselves and community groups, schools, bowls clubs etc. can also enter.

Categories for the award include:

  • Small garden
  • Medium to large garden
  • Container garden
  • Community garden
  • Environmental/ wildlife garden
  • Commercial garden

All categories are marked out of 100 and each consists of a number of sub-categories relating to the specific garden area.  A pass mark of 60 must be achieved in order to be eligible for the award.

Those who meet the criteria, which has been developed in partnership with residents, will be awarded a plaque (pictured) to display outside their home if they choose to.

Theresa Gordon, Community Services Co-ordinator at BVT, said: “The project has been developed with the support of a resident focus group who have worked with us to decide on the criteria, the standard of excellence and the design of the award.”
