National Apprenticeship Week: Meet BVT apprentice Selda

This week (5th-11th February) is the 17th annual National Apprenticeship Week and we’re delighted to mark it by introducing two of our apprentices at BVT. Earlier this week, Angel gave her thoughts on being an apprentice and today we’re delighted to introduce Selda, who is an apprentice electrician. Selda gives insight into the rewards and challenges of being an apprentice.

Why did you want to do an apprenticeship?

I wanted to do an apprenticeship as it was a great opportunity for me to acquire the skills and knowledge from qualified electricians as well as earning on the job doing something I really enjoy.

What attracted you to work at BVT?

I was attracted to work at Bournville as I have always known it to be a great area and lovely community and I wanted to be a part of it. I’ve always been to Bournville as I have family live here so it’s a perfect location for a job and I love to help people, so knowing I can work for a company to better people’s homes was such a brilliant opportunity.

What’s the best thing about being an apprentice at BVT?

The best things is definitely got to be the people I work with. They’ve helped me so much with my progression as an apprentice. I enjoy being able to work with qualified trades who have so much knowledge to give.

What’s the most challenging thing about being an apprentice at BVT?

The most challenging thing isn’t so much at BVT but as a whole of being a female doing a trade can be very difficult. It’s still a very male dominated job. But I have been welcomed at BVT by all the people that work here, and they have made me feel comfortable.

What advice would you give to someone looking to do an apprenticeship?

I would say go for it, at first it may be difficult as you’re learning something new but be patient and take your time as everyone learns at different paces. But as long as you use your initiative when working and show your eagerness and willing to learn you will go far. Always pre-empt what you may be expected to do, to show you are trying even when things may be difficult and don’t ever worry about asking questions.
