New store opens its doors on thriving Bournville shopping parade

A new convenience store has opened in Bournville today, bringing a well-known supermarket brand to a thriving shopping parade.

Morrisons Daily opened in place of the former Martin’s Newsagent on Sycamore Road on Friday (21st June) – less than a week after Martin’s closed.

Martin’s Newsagent was part of the McColl’s Retail Group which went into administration in May 2022, before being immediately bought by Morrisons.

Since then, Bournville Village Trust, which leases the shop, has worked closely with both McColl’s and Morrisons to make sure it continued to serve the local community.

Victoria Burnett-Rogers, Commercial Property Manager at Bournville Village Trust, said: “We are really pleased to welcome Morrisons Daily to our thriving shopping parade on Sycamore Road.

“The store was facing an uncertain future, but we worked hard with both McColl’s and Morrisons to maintain service for local people and secure a new convenience store.

“It will offer all the usual things, such as magazines, newspapers, snacks and drinks, with the quality of service and produce you can expect from the Morrisons’ brand.”

Donna Lindsay, Bournville Morrisons Daily Store Manager, said:  “The new Morrisons Daily fresh food convenience store will offer customers a carefully tailored mix of Morrisons own brand products alongside branded favourites.

“As well as new ranges, the store has received a complete redesign internally and externally incorporating Morrisons bright, modern branding. Fresh food is at the heart of the store and we hope customers will love it.”

The shop now occupied by Morrisons Daily is one of a number of retail units and commercial premises that Bournville Village Trust (BVT) own and manage.

As a not-for-profit charitable trust, BVT ploughs surplus from commercial activities, like managing shopping parades, back into the neighbourhoods it manages in central and south Birmingham and Telford.

Despite figures released last August from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) showing that nearly 14% of high street shops were unoccupied, Bournville has bucked that trend.

The Sycamore Road shopping parade, which dates back between 1905 and 1908, is fully occupied and includes shops and services ranging from a butchers, bakery and florist to a café and hairdressers.

Bournville Village Trust was founded by George Cadbury in 1900 and is one of the Midlands longest-serving independent charitable trusts and manages estates, provides homes, delivers community-support services and commercial activities.
