A Direct Labour Organisation (DLO) established in the 1920s has appointed a new manager to oversee the repairs service that it provides to thousands of homes.
Mark Hughes has over 30 years of experience in the repairs and maintenance sector, recently working as a Compliance and Repairs Manager for Derwent Living.
Starting his career as a bricklayer in 1984, Mark has also previously worked for North Devon Homes, Aspire Housing and Stoke-on-Trent City Council.
He will now manage the day-to-day running of Bournville PropertyCare Services (BPS), which employs 74 people and is part of housing association Bournville Village Trust.
BPS provides a 24 hour, seven day a week repair and maintenance service, including plumbing, gas and electrical work, to around 5,000 homes in Birmingham and Shropshire.
As well as managing the service, the role will also involve developing the company’s commitment to training apprentices and sourcing external work.
Mark Hughes, Head of Bournville PropertyCare Services, said: “This is a really exciting role for me within an organisation which has an excellent reputation for its repairs and maintenance service.
“BPS has also been recognised nationally for its commitment to training and employing apprentices and I’m looking forward to developing this area of our work further.”
Peter Roach, Chief Executive of Bournville Village Trust, said: “Having a DLO allows us to build skills in-house that can be adapted over time to respond to different maintenance challenges quickly and comprehensively, ensuring our customers get an excellent service.
“Mark will play an integral role in managing BPS as well as ensuring that we directly invest in and train the plumbers, electricians and carpenters of the future.”
Bournville PropertyCare Services was named as the country’s apprentice employer of the year last year by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).
It also beat seven other companies from across the UK to win the Leadership and Development Award at the National Constructing Excellence Awards in 2014.
