Filming for The Cadburys, the story of the Cadbury family, is currently underway in Birmingham.
The six-part series will follow the visionary family on their journey towards creating the world-famous Cadbury’s chocolate bar. It is being produced by Fable Pictures, in association with Alfresco Pictures.
The show will be set in 1860s Birmingham, when chocolate as we know it doesn’t yet exist. Two very different brothers, Richard (played by Toby Regbo) and George Cadbury (Harry Gilby), find themselves in charge of their family’s failing cocoa business.
Together, they have the radical genius and burning ambition to turn Cadbury into one of the world’s most beloved confectioners – if they can only learn to trust and rely on each other.
Their sister Maria (played by Jessica Barden) is navigating her own role within the family and the business, but things become even more complicated when she falls in love with Cadbury’s biggest rival, Francis Fry, and is forced to question where her true loyalties really lie.
Infused with historical delights and magical invention, The Cadburys, producers say, is about how we build, break and rebuild the bonds of family – and how the sweetest things in life are rarely simple.
Whilst the show is set many years before Bournville was created. Bournville Village Trust has been working with producers to open and share our archives.
Producers also met Caroline Cadbury, Chair of Bournville Village Trust and great granddaughter of George Cadbury, and our Heritage Manager, Daniel Callicott.
Caroline Cadbury, Chair of Trustees, said: “I was thrilled to be invited onto one of the sets of The Cadburys, which was technically and artistically amazing, and I can’t wait to see it on screen.
“It’s particularly wonderful to be able to share our rich and interesting archive with the producers of the show and to play our part in helping to inform the story.
“I am also incredibly proud that parts of the show are being filmed in Birmingham, not only because it is the city my great grandfather called home, but this kind of investment and belief in Birmingham is so vital to its future.”
