The Scrutiny Panel is a mix of owner-occupiers and tenants who work together to help shape and improve services provided by BVT.

A cross-section of BVT residents from different parts of the estate, members bring a variety of different skills, experiences and perspectives to the group.

The Panel focus on a particular service or issue and carry out an in-depth review of what is working and what might need improving.

A review will involve interviewing key staff, researching what other housing associations are doing, and listening to the views of residents.

The Panel then write a report on their findings with recommendations that are shared with management. They meet once a month on a Monday evening at our offices.

It is not all about sitting in meetings though. Members have visited Wrekin Housing Trust, carried out phone interviews with West Kent Homes, and visited Port Sunlight.

And there is so much more….

If you are interested in learning about the housing sector and the role of BVT as a social landlord, then joining the Panel will help you explore this.

Many panel members have developed wider interests and there are opportunities to do more than the regular reviews.

For example, panel members engaged with the Government’s Social Housing green paper “A new deal for Social Housing” and sent both a written response (Social Housing Green Paper – BVT Scrutiny Panel Response) as well as a representative to engagement events in Birmingham.

Some recent high points for the Panel:

  • The most recent Chair of the group, aged 19, has just left to study for a degree. Joining the Panel helped to develop his confidence
  • The current Chair of the Panel wrote an article for Inside Housing magazine and was subsequently invited to run a workshop at the Northern Housing Consortium’s eighth National Tenant Panels Conference.
