Frozen Pipes

Winter weather can cause all sorts of problems in your home, including frozen pipes which can stop boilers working as they should.

Before reporting a repair, it is important that you check if the plastic condensate pipe for your boiler (which is on the outside of your home and is usually grey or white) isn’t frozen.

A common sign of a frozen condensate pipe is the boiler making a ‘bubbling’ or ‘boiling’ noise due to the condensate liquid being present in the main heat exchanger.

If the pipe is frozen, and you can reach it, you can defrost it by pouring hot (not boiling) water along the length of it and then wrapping it in a towel soaked in hot water. After doing this you can usually hear the excess condense water running through it.

Once you have done this, wait for around 10 minutes before resetting the boiler to see if it is working. You can read how to do this in the manual for your boilers’ make and model on the Gas Safety page of our website.

If your boiler still isn’t working after you have done this, or you are unsure about what to do, please call us on 0300 333 6540.
