We can support you to access equipment and adaptations that help you stay independent in your home.

Our equipment and adaptations service is designed to work with you, local authorities, and other agencies to assess, approve and fit adaptations in a fair and consistent way.

Depending on the type of equipment or adaptation you need, we can make minor adaptations to your home or help you access local authority services for major adaptations.

Examples of equipment and adaptions, include:

Minor adaptations

  • Simple, small-scale changes like grab rails, lever taps or window opening equipment.

Major adaptations

  • Larger modifications such as stairlifts, level access showers, door widening, ramps or home extensions.

We look at requests for equipment and adaptations on a case-by-case basis and consider feasibility, funding and long-term suitability.

Sometimes we’ll signpost you to your local authority’s occupational therapy service so they can assess your needs. And we work closely with occupational therapists and your local authority to monitor your case.

If you want to apply directly to your local authority for equipment or an adaptation, please contact:

  • Birmingham City Council’s Occupational Therapist Team on 0121 303 1234.
  • Telford and Wrekin Council’s Independence Partnership Team on 01952 916030.
