FAQs home changes

1: I’ve signed up to apply to make an alteration but haven’t received an email to activate my account?

Activation emails are usually delivered in a couple of minutes or a few hours depending on your email provider. Please check your spam/junk folder and call us on 0300 333 6540 or email enquiries@bvt.org.uk after 24 hours if you haven’t received it.

2: I have tried to log-i, but I keep seeing a message that says my username or password is incorrect?

If you’re confident you’ve entered the correct details, please try:

  • Deleting your browsing history before trying again.
  • Try using a different computer or mobile device.

3: I’ve completed part of my application form but when I go back, I can only see a blank form?

You must save your form before exiting or it won’t save. You can do this by scrolling to the bottom of the form and selecting ‘save and exit application’. You’ll see a message with a link you can use to go back and complete your form, you can also email the link to yourself. If you email the link to yourself, you’ll need to type your email address into the ‘email address’ box and click ‘send link’. The link will expire after 30 days.

4: I’m having problems uploading drawings / photos etc?

We accept jpg, gif, png, pdf files. Please make sure files are in these formats. If you still have problems uploading a drawing or photo, please call us on 0300 333 6540 or email enquiries@bvt.org.uk

5: I’ve finished my application, but it won’t let me submit?

Please check you’ve filled in all the required fields and uploaded any images/files requested. If you’re still having problems, please call us on 0300 333 6540 or email enquiries@bvt.org.uk

6: Do I have to apply to BVT and the local authority if I want to make a home alteration?

This will depend on the type of alteration you’re planning. Please read our design guides, on our home changes and design guides page, for comprehensive information about permissions.

7: What if I don’t get permission from BVT?

If your application is refused, you can submit a new amended application. You can also appeal the decision. Please read our design guides for comprehensive information about making an appeal.

8: Do I need an architect?

You don’t have to hire an architect, but you may find it useful to have assistance from a professional for some alterations.

9: I’ve been given first stage approval, but I need to make some revisions to my application. What should I do?

You’ll need to submit further details about the changes you’d like to make, including uploading any new or amended drawings, and your approved application number. You can do this by filling in our application form. Please be aware there is a fee for revisions.
